With summer firmly on the way, thoughts turn to making sure that your air conditioning is in A1 condition before the end of spring arrives – you really don’t want to get to summer and find that your AC isn’t working as it should.
We always advise that you run the system occasionally over winter and spring, this enables you to make sure that it is actually working as it should and also means that the system is circulating the gases which quite often contain lubricants and additives that help maintain the system. It is also allows plenty of time in case a repair is needed.
Changing the filters in your system helps to ensure efficiency and that there will be no debris circulating. Added detritus within your system can actually cause some pretty big problems, even if it looks almost microscopic. A good maintenance schedule will mean that filters are generally replaced anyway, but they are always worth checking.
Depending on where your unit is located (outdoors for example), could mean an extra bit of work before getting the system running again – make sure that the unit is thoroughly cleaned of any debris (leaves, twigs, small animals etc) before use. Give the system a thorough inspection and make sure that there aren’t any major & visible problems, call out a professional if something seems wrong.
Having a professional look at the system before running it up is always sensible, they can advise you as to what should or shouldn’t be done to run the system. They can also ensure that the system is working at peak efficiency, meaning your bills will be the lowest they can be.

Being able to simply turn on the cool or warm air in your home is ideal to help keep you comfortable. It’s important to take the proper care of your HVAC unit so that it will take care of you as necessary. There are specific things you should do with each change of season during the year. Knowing tips for maintaining your HVAC system when spring is arriving and winter is ending are sure to help keep it functioning well for you.
Unclog the Condenser Coils
It’s important to keep your unit well-maintained at all times. One of the common areas that may get overly dirty and can cause problems for your HVAC unit is with your condenser coils. These are on the exterior unit and are subject to a great deal of debris which can cause them to clog up in the winter.
This is a job that you may be capable of doing on your own by just clearing any weeds, leaves or other debris that may have formed on your condenser coils.
Check the Condenser Bin
It’s important for your HVAC unit to have the right amount of moisture, but not too much. You can gauge the amount of this by looking underneath your unit that sits outside and checking the condenser bin. This item should be damp, but not overflowing with water. If there is too much moisture, you may need to rely on the expertise of an HVAC professional.
