3 Reasons Why You Should Get A Humidifier This Winter

Posted on February 1st, 2019

FB Blogs (9)

The winters here in Utah are very dry. Maintaining the ideal indoor humidity level is important to ensure that your home isn’t growing mold or mildew.  Not only is this hard on your home, but it can also cause a myriad of health problems for those living in your home.

Why is having a humidifier important? These three reasons might surprise you.

The TOP 3 Reasons why you should Install a Whole Home Humidifier:

1. Improve your health.

dry-skinOur bodies are made up of between 60 and 65% of water. When the humidity levels in our home are below 40% that causes our bodies to work harder to retain moisture. Often times we end up with chronic dry coughs, stuffy noses, very dry and cracking skin, headaches from dehydration, and a multitude of other unpleasant symptoms. Our nasal passages dry out, leaving us more susceptible to colds and sinus infections.

2. Protect the wood in your home.

Warped FloorMany homeowners do not realize what the proper humidity levels are for a home. Ideal humidity levels should be between 45 and 65%. With each winter the loss of moisture to a home dries out wood and can actually cause walls to shift. It is also damaging to any other wood materials or items in the home.

3. Maintain correct humidity levels.

If too much humidity is happening in your home, it can cause mold and mildew to grow. We definitely don’t want that! Humidifiers are also known for reducing dust and dust mites in your home, keeping those with dust allergies happy and requiring you to dust less. There’s also nothing worse than being shocked just from walking across the room. Humidifiers help to eliminate that from happening by maintaining the proper humidity levels.

Don’t let the cold dry air harm your home and family this year. Give us a call and we’ll come assess your home and humidity levels to see if a humidifier is a good investment.

Why Get A Western Pre-Season AC Tune-Up?

When was the last time you changed the oil in your car? Probably when the manufacturer recommended, based on the mileage and time since the previous oil change.

Your AC should be no different. It might be stationary, but it’s certainly not something you can set and forget.

Maintenance is a must for your AC, not an option. Here’s a few things you can expect from a Western Tune-Up:

Plus much more!  Though there’s many reasons you should keep your AC maintained, here is 4 that we believe is the most important:

John AC tune up 2

1.  Reduce Risk of Shutdowns at the Wrong Time
The first reason to keep on top of your AC is to prevent a major catastrophe. Having no AC in the middle of the summer is like your car shutting down at the side of the highway. You never want to be in that situation. Preventative maintenance on your AC reduces the likelihood of being left out in the heat.

2.  Keep Your AC Working Longer

The harder your equipment has to work, the shorter its lifespan. As with any machine, wear and tear will take a toll. The inevitable shutdown happens much sooner if you keep pushing your equipment without proper maintenance. Regular tune-ups will lengthen your AC equipment life, saving you money.

3.  Lower Your Energy Bill
No matter what shape your equipment is in, it has to provide the same amount of heating or cooling on a given day. A unit in top shape will do so with less effort, using less electricity and gas to keep your home at the right temperature. Proper tune-up will allow your AC to work without emptying your pockets to pay outrageous energy bills.

4.  Improve Indoor Air Quality
A well-functioning AC can help with humidity levels in your home, which can help your IAQ (indoor air quality) by reducing airborne allergens and mold growth. Mold can be a huge IAQ problem because of moisture and high temperatures. Your AC is a vital tool that can help keep these things at bay. A professional inspection and tune-up will help prevent these kinds of problems from happening, keeping you and your family healthy.

Getting it done
To keep your home’s air system working well, give us a call and we’ll tune-up your AC so you’ll be cool this summer!

Is Your Air as Delicious as Mine?

There was a time when the air outside was more polluted than indoor air. Nowadays, pollutants can be two to five times more concentrated indoors than outdoors. To compound this problem, most people spend up to 90% of their time inside.

Why indoor air quality (IAQ) matters
The air you breath has a huge impact on your well-being. Health issues caused by poor IAQ can be immediate or long term depending on the type and concentration of pollutants. Short term symptoms include sore throat, fatigue or headaches. Long term effects include the development of respiratory illnesses and even cancer.

Here are 4 ways to improve your home’s IAQ:

Air cleaners and purifiers
You can clean the air throughout your house or you can deal with it room by room. Whole house air cleaners are placed in the return duct to your furnace. The air first passes through the purifier’s filters to remove allergens and pollutants before entering the furnace. Then it gets distributed throughout your home via ductwork.

Alternatively, you can opt for a purifier that takes care of only one room. These units clean more air in that space but the obvious disadvantage is that the rest of the house won’t benefit.

UV light
UV light is used in air purifiers to kill bacteria and mold spores so it helps reduce allergens in the home. Depending on the technology used, it can sometimes produce high levels of ozone, which is a pollutant. If you choose to use UV light, consult the manufacturer about the potential for ozone creation.

Natural ventilation
Depending on the weather, you can use natural ventilation to introduce clean air into your home. Open the windows and doors on opposite sides of your home to allow outdoor air to flow through. Be careful if you have allergies to pollen and dust as this can introduce more allergens into your home.

Mechanical ventilation
To increase the amount of outdoor air in your home, exhaust fans and ventilators can give you measured flow rates so you know you’re getting the right amount of air. Whether or not you decide to go with an air purifier, you will still need proper ventilation to replace stale air with fresh air so this is fundamental to all homes.

If you need help cleaning out your home’s air, give us a call and we can talk about the best options and how to implement them.  Don’t forget to take a look at our Air Scrubber and Whole Home Humidifier, which will help improve your IAQ drastically!

Welcome Spring!

Being able to simply turn on the cool or warm air in your home is ideal to help keep you comfortable. With spring right around the corner, it’s important to take the proper care of your HVAC system so that it will take care of you as necessary.

There are specific things you should do with each change of season during the year. Knowing tips for maintaining your HVAC system when spring is arriving and winter is ending are sure to help keep it functioning well for you.

 1.  Unclog the Condenser Coils

It’s important to keep your unit well-maintained at all times. One of the common areas that may get overly dirty and can cause problems for your HVAC system is with your condenser coils. These are on the exterior unit and are subject to a great deal of debris which can cause them to clog up in the winter.

This is a job that you may be capable of doing on your own by just clearing any weeds, leaves or other debris that may have formed on your condenser coils.

2.  Check the Condenser Bin

It’s important for your HVAC unit to have the right amount of moisture, but not too much. You can gauge the amount of this by looking underneath your unit that sits outside and checking the condenser bin. This item should be damp, but not overflowing with water. If there is too much moisture, you may need to rely on the expertise of an HVAC professional.

Why Get Preventative Maintenance?

Annual maintenance on your HVAC equipment is so beneficial to the life of your equipment. It will last longer, and run more efficiently, thus saving you money and unnecessary repairs in the future. A certified, professional technician can help you identify problems before they start.

Schedule Soon

Don’t wait until the weather is steaming hot to ensure you air conditioning is running properly. Simply schedule an appointment with a one the trusted, professional technicians at Western Heating and Air Conditioning to check and fix any repairs that may need doing. We are Celebrating HVAC Tech Day!

Team photo 2017

On June 22nd, we celebrate HVAC (Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning) Tech Day, showing appreciation for those awesome technicians with the special skills to keep our indoor conditions just right. These men and women come in late at night, on weekends and holidays to climb on your roof, into your crawlspace and attic to install and keep your HVAC systems going.

They maintain equipment like furnaces, fans and air-conditioners. They install and maintain ductwork, refrigerant piping, hot water piping, controls, thermostats and combustion venting for our systems to work.

Why should you celebrate HVAC technicians?

– They help keep you warm in winter and cool in summer.
Sometimes we tend to take our comfort for granted as long as everything is working well. But nevertheless, when things go array we always have technicians to help keep our equipment in check.

– They make sure you’re getting the right ventilation
Heating and cooling equipment are not the only systems critical to indoor air quality. HVAC technicians also maintain equipment that gives you the right amount of fresh air to keep your family healthy.

– They keep you safe
When things go wrong with HVAC systems, it’s more than just discomfort. Carbon monoxide leaks, electrical fire, explosion hazards and gas leaks can all put you at risk. Keeping your equipment in top shape is another way HVAC technicians help protect you from disasters.

– They save you energy
When your equipment is new, energy use is low as efficiencies are higher. As your home and HVAC equipment age, you need the right maintenance to minimize power and gas usage. HVAC technicians keep your energy consumption low by maintenance and upgrades to your systems.

– They save you money
When you use less electricity and gas, your bills go down, allowing you to keep more of your hard-earned cash. Not only do HVAC technicians help lower your bills, but their maintenance of your equipment postpones the time before you need to replace it. This saves money in the long run and allows you the opportunity to upgrade after enjoying the full lifespan of your HVAC equipment.

We’re here to serve you!

As we celebrate HVAC Tech Day, we hope you will take time to thank your technician for the hard work and dedication to serving their community. In return, we’d like to thank you for your support and letting us serve you. Give Utah’s Most Wanted Techs from Western Heating & Air Conditioning a call if you need anything done to your HVAC System and we’ll be happy to help.

Why AC Units Leak

A leaking air conditioner is a red flag that something’s wrong with your system. Besides the inconvenience of having to clean water from the ground, leaking AC units can cause water damage, mold, and even a fire if the moisture gets near electrical equipment.

So why does it happen? Here are some possible reasons:  AC

Frozen evaporator coils
If the evaporator coils form ice on them, this build-up can melt and overflow from your drain pan. There are three main causes of a frozen coil:

  1. Dirty filter: If your filter has a build-up of dust, it will slow the airflow through the coil, causing it to get too cold and form ice on the surface. Luckily, this one’s an easy fix. Simply clean or replace your filter and keep monitoring to make sure it never gets too dirty.
  2. Low pressure in refrigerant lines: If there is not enough refrigerant, the pressure will be too low, reducing the coil’s ability to remove heat from the air, which causes it to freeze. Low refrigerant can damage your compressor so turn off your unit and call a professional immediately. You might be leaking refrigerant.
  3. Fan problems: Your filter might be clean but the air flowing through your coil still isn’t enough. If you notice low airflow through the vents in addition to the frozen coil, your fan is likely the cause. Shut off your unit and call a professional to repair this problem.

Condensate problems
Air conditioners do more than cool the air. They remove humidity as well, which forms condensate that has to be removed. Usually it happens without an issue but if your condensate is building up and overflowing, you might have condensate drainage problems. Here are three main reasons why:

  1. Blocked condensate drain: as with all drains, a blockage will cause a backup. Clear the drain if you can or call a technician to clean or replace the line if needed.
  2. Damaged drain pan: your drain pan might be cracked and leaking condensate. While you can temporarily repair a crack with sealant, it’s best to replace the drain pan completely.
  3. Broken condensate pump: depending on where your unit it, you might have a pump to remove condensate. If this pump is broken, water will build up and overflow. You’ll need to replace your pump to solve this problem.

Utah’s Most Wanted Techs at Western Heating & Air Conditioning are trained and ready to help you detect and identify the cause of the leak in your air conditioner. Our goal is to fix it right the first time, and help you experience a whole new level of cool comfort in your home. Case Study: A/C Tune-Up

Western Heating & Air Conditioning provides solutions to your HVAC problems.  See how we helped this customer cool his home again.

CUSTOMER’S CHALLENGE:

Russell and his family live in Provo and noticed that they couldn’t feel as much cold air coming through their vents and figured it was just a problem with their blower filter being clogged.  Like most people, they put the issue aside and forgot about it.  Thankfully they are Monument Club Members, so Western gave them a call reminding them that it was time for their routine tune-up at a discounted price.

WESTERN’S SOLUTION:

One of Western’s Most Wanted Technicians, Adam, was sent to visit Russell for a tune-up.  Adam first checked the outside A/C unit before going inside to make sure the unit itself was working properly.  From the outside, Adam saw that the A/C looked clean and damage free.  It wasn’t until he unscrewed the cover to see how dirty and cluttered it was inside the A/C unit.

AC case studyThere were cobwebs, leaves, and dirt everywhere.  After a 30 point Precision Tune-Up, Adam found that the A/C was working properly.  Like every tune-up Western does, Adam took the time to properly clean and clear out the inside of the A/C unit to prevent it from potential break downs or issues in the future.

FINAL RESULTS:

Adam spoke with Russell and let him know that his diagnosis of the issue was that the system just needed to be cleaned and serviced.  He also mentioned that there was nothing wrong with the A/C unit besides that it was dirty on the inside, which could cause several problems in a few years since his A/C was 10 years old.  Adam helped switch the filter in Russell’s vents and had the A/C blowing cold air again.  Russell was glad he got a tune-up to rejuvenate his A/C and keep it in great shape and that Adam showed him how to keep his A/C clean so that it’d extend the life of the unit.

REMEMBER THIS:

1)  A/C units have an average 15 year lifetime.  Around this time different parts begin to wear and the unit can break down.  If your A/C is routinely maintained then you may be able to extend the life for several additional years.  That’s why we’ve provided the Monument Club for customers so we can keep track of their A/C for them!

2)  A/C units are easy to clean!  Adam has said that anyone can simply screw the cover off their unit, check what’s inside, and clean it out. Simply, all you need to do is to remove any debris, hose the outside and inside, and if any of the outside fins are bent, grab a butter knife and straighten them out!  There is a lot more to a tune-up than that, but those 3 things are basic things that homeowners can do.

3)  Every A/C is different, so be sure to call Western Heating & Air Conditioning today to have a technician come out to give your A/C tune-up to keep it running great.  It could save you hundreds, even thousands of dollars down the road to take a few minutes to clean and service your A/C unit.

Living in Utah or Salt Lake county in the winter can wreak havoc on your lungs, especially during one of our awful inversions. If you have asthma or weak lungs, this can be even more damaging to your health. Often times we think if we stay indoors, we won’t be affected. However, this is incorrect.

Did you know the quality of air inside your home and buildings can be just as damaging if not more so than being outside? Many customers call us asking, “How do I know if my air quality is poor in my home and how do I improve it?”. We tell them the best way to find out, is to first ask yourself and the people living in your home if any of you chronically suffer from the following symptoms:is-your-child-breathing-fresh-air-inside-your-home-jpg

If the answer is yes, most likely your air quality is responsible for all or most of the symptoms. We want your family to experience the best when it comes to clean air in your home.

Here are the steps we recommend you take next to improve poor indoor air quality:

1. We recommend scheduling one of our expert technicians to come analyze your air ducts, filters, and overall HVAC system, possibly performing an air duct cleaning. Click here to schedule a service call or dial 801-375-COOL.

2. Consider purchasing an Air Scrubber System. These systems are designed to scrub out the harmful toxins in the air, as well as sanitize the germs in your home, keeping you and your family healthy. Click here to learn more.

3. Adding a Whole Home Humidifier to your home can also help in alleviating poor air quality symptoms by keeping humidity levels even and moisturizing the air your lungs breath.

Often times people don’t realize how much they have been suffering from the effects of poor indoor air quality, until something is done to fix the problem. Changing out the filters on your units regularly can help, but your air ducts build up bacteria, germs, dirt and mold and need to be cleaned regularly. Proper HVAC maintenance is key to maintaining good air quality. Remember if you’re a Maintenance Club member, you receive special discounts on services and products, plus WE CALL YOU to schedule your regular maintenance check ups.

Whatever your heating or cooling problem is, you can count on us day or night to find the right solution for you.

The Benefits of Air Duct CleaningMany people don’t think about air duct cleaning until it is absolutely necessary. Because the air ducts are hidden from sight, it is easy to forget about them. However, nothing is more important to your indoor air quality than your duct system. To have a healthy and efficient home, you need to schedule regular duct cleaning. Here are just a few of the many benefits you will experience from air duct cleaning.

Healthier Home

Did you know that many people suffer from the health effects of dirty ducts and don’t even know it? It is true! Dirt, bacteria, and even viruses can lurk in your duct system and then are blown all around your home. Dirty ducts can cause the following symptoms:

These symptoms can be quickly resolved with a thorough duct cleaning. If the symptoms persist or get worse, you should seek medical attention.

Energy Efficiency

The same dirt, dust, mold, and mildew that gunks up your duct system can also start to gunk up your HVAC system. It can cause your air filters to become dirtier much more quickly. It can also cause your HVAC system to work much harder to keep the right temperature within your home. With air duct cleaning, your system can run much cleaner, saving you money in energy bills.

Choose a Quality Air Duct Cleaning Company

There are many companies out there that claim ridiculously cheap pricing for their duct cleaning. The truth is, you get what you pay for when it comes to air duct cleaning. You should never trust just anyone with the health and safety of your home. Western Heating & Air Conditioning is a quality business with a long history of customer satisfaction.

For more about the benefits of air duct cleaning, contact the experts at Western Heating & Air Conditioning. We are happy to assist you!

3 Health Benefits of Clean Indoor Air

Health Benefits Indoor Air cleanersYou always hear about the concerns about outdoor air pollution. But what about indoor air quality? Did you know that in many homes, the indoor air quality is actually worse than the outdoor air quality? This can cause many health issues that may be preventable with the right air filtration. Here are just some of the great benefits of clean indoor air.

1) Decrease Asthma Symptoms

According to the National Institute of Allergy and Infections Diseases, more than 25 million people in the United States suffer from asthma. That number keeps growing every year. While the symptoms of asthma are serious, minimizing triggers can help to control the serious effects. With proper filtration, asthma symptoms can be lessened.

2) Decrease Allergy & Respiratory Symptoms

Indoors there is a lot more exposure to dust and dander particles that can trigger allergic reactions. By decreasing the amount of dirt and dust in the air, you can lessen the symptoms of certain allergies. This can lead to a big increase in quality of life.

3) Increased Respiratory Health

We spend most of our time indoors. With bad indoor air quality, people often feel less than optimal 365 days a year. Sneezing, coughing, and runny noses are commonplace with people who suffer from respiratory issues. With clean indoor air, you can feel more alert and energetic, even when you are stuck inside.

How to Clean Your Air

The best way to clean your home’s air is to invest in a high-quality air filter for your heating and cooling system and replace it seasonally. You may also purchase air quality products, such as our Air Scrubber, to help clean your air at a low cost. If you are using your A/C or Furnace on a daily basis, consider replacing it every quarter. If you use your system sporadically, twice a year would be recommended.

For more information on how to improve the air quality in your home, call Western Heating & Air Conditioning at 801-375-COOL or visit us online at TimeForComfort.com. We are happy to answer all your questions and concerns!

Open WindowYou probably don’t think about the humidity inside your home. However, the humidity inside your home can be uncomfortable and contribute to other household problems. Here’s a few signs that you need a dehumidifier inside your home to improve indoor air quality:

Dust Sticks

Excess humidity inside your home will make dust and dirt stick to furniture, appliances and the floor. You may not notice the problem initially, but when you go to dust throughout your home, you probably need more effort to get the area clean. A basic duster will probably not work well, and you may need wet wipes to soften and wipe away dust and dirt.

Mold Growth

You may start noticing black areas on the wall if you have a humidity problem. The humidity is a prime opportunity for mold to grow inside your home. Hidden locations are even worse, such as the back of closets, since the air is more stuffy and goes undisturbed.

Stuffy Air

You may walk inside and the air feels stuffy and may smell stale or like mildew. This is usually a sign that humidity is a problem throughout your home. The stuffy air can also contribute to or exacerbate breathing problems if anyone in your household is sensitive. Decreasing the humidity inside your home is one way to improve indoor air quality.

It’s Hotter Than Usual

Humidity can factor into how effective your air conditioner is at cooling your home. The higher the humidity inside your home, the hotter it feels and it will take longer to become comfortable in your home, even after you turn on the air conditioner. You may notice the thermostat’s temperature seems low, but you still feel uncomfortable.

We Can Help!

Don’t be stuck with a stuffy home. Call Western Heating & Air Conditioning at (801) 224-8899 and schedule an appointment. We can help regulate your humidity and make your home more comfortable.

Improving Indoor Air QualityBeing able to keep the air in your home healthy is important. Doing so will depend on how much you can improve the indoor air quality and especially in the summer months. You will want to have air that is breathable and can increase rather than decrease your health. Knowing tips for improving your indoor air quality when the temperature starts to rise is ideal.

Clean the Floors

One of the best ways to help keep the air in your home fresh is by cleaning the floors. Be sure to vacuum the carpet at least once a week for the best results and even more frequently than this if you suffer from extreme allergies.

It’s ideal to mop the ceramic, tile or wood floors weekly, as well. This will get rid of the dust and other pollutants in your home that could deter you from having a higher quality of air in your home.

Create a No Smoking Zone

Smoke is one of the worse toxins to let in your home, and this should be avoided. Refrain from smoking in the house and ask others not to do so, as well to keep your indoor air quality high.

Being able to create a smoke-free environment, this will allow you to have better air quality for your health and your loved ones.

Air Conditioner RepairOriginally, we were thinking of writing something like ‘top ten benefits of air conditioner repair’, but let’s be honest, the main benefit is all about COST.

And why shouldn’t it be?

In this day and age, money is getting tighter – those dollars just seem to magically disappear as soon as they hit the checking account. Saving a few bucks here and there is now becoming part of daily life, and we can help you with that when it comes to air conditioning repair.

Dependable Service

We like fitting new air condition systems; it’s something that we do well! However, when your old ac unit is getting tired and worn out, we will always try to repair it where possible, we aren’t just going to try and sell you a new system, and with our experience and knowledge, repairing ac units is second nature to us. This keeps costs down and repair time to a minimum – that is what we would call a win-win situation.

Familiar

We aren’t talking about our friendly technicians, but your old system; you are familiar with it, with the controls, with how much you should alter certain settings when the need arises, of exactly what it will do when it’s switched on. You don’t need to learn all those ‘quirks’ with a new system – another great benefit of repairing your old system.

Of course, should you think it time to replace your old air conditioning, we are always happy to talk through the options and give you our advice. Our technicians are experts in all things HVAC related.

If you have any queries regarding your HVAC system, want to book some scheduled maintenance or discuss the benefits of a new system, CONTACT US for free and friendly advice.

Benefits Scheduled Maintenance Air ConditioningAs utility prices climb ever higher, it is worth keeping in mind that a badly maintained air conditioning unit can lose around 30% of its efficiency. Not only that, but because it is in-efficient, it will be on for longer just trying to maintain comfort levels and may never reach your desired temperature.

Premature Failure

Regular and scheduled maintenance helps your air conditioning unit to run as it was intended; meaning shorter cycling times and less chance of a premature failure. It also means that any problems can be picked up early and dealt with before they become full on breakdowns.

Knowledge

When our technician comes out to maintain your unit, they will check the performance of the system and will be able to give you solid advice as to the condition of it and whether they see any potential problems, this means that you have time to decide on what may be the best course of action, you have all the knowledge you need to make informed decisions.

D-DIY (DON’T Do It Yourself)

If your unit is outside, occasionally brushing off the fallen leaves or general yard debris doesn’t constitute as maintenance, equally if it’s inside, nor does brushing away the cobwebs or what have you. It may be tempting to try and save a few dollars by maintaining it yourself, but in the long run, it will end up costing you.

Whatever you need from your HVAC contractor, Western Heating and Air Conditioning are sure to be the #1 choice for you. We have experienced professionals, all with expert knowledge who are happy to give un-biased and professional advice regarding any HVAC need that you may have.

Indoor Air QualityWhile few people know it, the contaminants that exist in your indoor air can greatly impact the way you live your day to day life. Whether you find you have constant headaches, or simply cannot seem to stop getting sick, it may be time you had a technician from Western Heating & Air come to your home to inspect your indoor air quality standards. By locating the cause of your air quality problems, a technician can help you to remove long lasting odors or air contaminants from your home.

  1. Clean Air Ducts

Air ducts can accumulate a thick layer of dust after just a few years. One of the first services our technicians might suggest is an air duct cleaning. This procedure can raise your indoor air quality standards significantly by reducing the dust, debris, and other air pollutants that may be blocking your home ventilation. Our services get the dust and build-up out of your home so it can no longer pollute your air.

  1. Install Proper Ventilation

Poor ventilation throughout your home may be a large contributing factor to the poor quality in your home. Our certified HVAC technicians in Orem can give you options and suggestions about what kind of ventilation may be necessary in maintaining higher air quality.

  1. Replace Air Filters

While it seems simple, regularly changing your air filter can significantly reduce the amount of pollutants in your indoor air. If you have a hard time remembering to change your filter, hiring our technicians for regular AC maintenance can give you the ease of allowing us to change the filter for you.

If you are ready to improve your indoor air quality standards, contact our professionals at Western Heating & Air. As you look to reduce the pollutants in your home or business in the Orem, UT area, we invite you to contact us to learn more about our services.
